Broadway veteran returns to OKC for a ‘White Christmas’

Get ready for a classic holiday treat as ܽƵ unwraps the movie-inspired magic of a heartwarming blend of romance, laughter and show-stopping musical numbers just in time to kick off the festive season. ܽƵ will ring in the holiday season Nov. 21-23 with Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

Based on the classic 1954 film, the romantic comedy follows two Army buddies who team with a singing sister act to save their former commanding officer from a snowless winter at a Vermont inn, discovering love along the way. Berlin once called the musical’s title song “not only the best song I ever wrote, it’s the best song anybody ever wrote.”

ܽƵ alumnus Brian Marcum, a Broadway veteran and award-winning artistic director of Music Theatre Wichita, returns to campus to direct and choreograph the cast of 33.

“White Christmas has all the holiday feels: a beautiful story, wonderful singing and dancing,” Marcum said. “We have huge production numbers and a fantastic cast of uber-talented ܽƵ students. You will be blown away by the voices and the dancing!”

The musical will be presented the weekend before Thanksgiving in the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center, 2501 N. Blackwelder. A free curtain talk will be held 30 minutes before each performance. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 22, with a 2 p.m. Nov. 23 matinee, on ܽƵ’s historic Kirkpatrick mainstage. Tickets are available from okcu.edu/tickets or 405-208-5227.

Marcum earned a BPA in dance performance from ܽƵ before performing in six Broadway musicals.

“Returning to ܽƵ to work with these students has been such a joy. They are the kindest and most hard-working. Their talent is out of this world and I find myself getting lost in just listening to their glorious voices. I’m also super proud to have a mix of music theatre, dance and theatre majors in the cast. It really showcases the diversity of the programs and the student experience. It highlights the great training at ܽƵ and the good humans that come out of this university,” Marcum said.

Jan McDaniel will conduct the 33-piece “White Christmas” orchestra. Choreography is by Sheri Hayden, with original costumes designed by Alyssa Couturier-Herndon.

ܽƵ’s holiday performing arts season will continue Dec. 11-14 with “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” the Star Dance Company’s “Holiday Spectacular,” and Christmas Vespers concerts.
